Underwater Treadmill

The underwater treadmill is beneficial for neurological problems, soft tissue injuries, fracture repairs, contractures, arthritis, muscle spasms and weakness, overall fitness and weight loss.

Exercising in the underwater treadmill has unique features which are very beneficial in therapy.
• Thermal effects: exercising in warm water increases joint flexibility, circulation to muscles and decreases joint pain.
• Buoyancy: the upward thrust of the water causes a decrease in body weight allowing for more pain free exercise and weight bearing while improving balance and coordination
• Hydrostatic pressure: beneficial for edema or swollen joints and may decrease pain by providing constant stimuli to pain receptors, making them less sensitive.
• Cohesion and surface tension provide resistance which strengthens muscles and improves endurance and cardiovascular and respiratory fitness.

Another very important benefit of exercising in the underwater treadmill is the increased emotional well being of the patient. It provides more pain free exercise, patients can stand without fear of falling, and many movements can be performed that the patient was unable to do on land.

Most dogs adjust very well to the underwater treadmill and learn to enjoy it. All four sides are clear allowing for constant observation of the patient. For the weak, debilitated, frightened or new patient, there is plenty of room for a person to be inside, even with the big dogs. Treats or toys can be given over the side to encourage the patient.
